CROWN Day (July 3)

July 3, 2020 marks the one year anniversary of the signing of the inaugural CROWN Act, meant to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools. First signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, the act has since passed in 6 other states (NY, NJ, VA, CO, WA, MD).
As stated in an article published by The Root, "CROWN stands for Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair/with No Racism). Today is a day of solidarity for the human rights of Black men, women and children to wear their natural hair boldly and proudly, without the fear of being discriminated against in school or the workplace." This legislation is sponsored by the CROWN Coalition, an alliance founded by Dove, National Urban League, Western Center on Law & Poverty, and Color Of Change.
